This
is Venezuelan "king of trumpet" Pedro Rafael Chaparro's second album as a bandleader of Chaparro Y Su Orquesta. Released in
1972, El Padriño (The Godfather) has character with outstanding individual performances by all the musicians involved and
it is very well orchestrated by Tony Pabón with arrangements by Kenny Gomez (La Protesta, Conjunto Impacto - also in "Lost
Classics Of Salsa, Vol. 1"). The whole album comes with the driving trumpet playing by Chaparro and Doc Cheatam; very nice bass
reefs by Russel Farnsworth, groovy and strong piano play by Emilio Pérez; Jackie Dillomis on congas; Louis Mangual on bongos;
Leo Gonzalez on coros and the hard timbal playing throughout by Martin Cartagena with Victor Rodríguez and Leo Gonzalez taking
turns on vocals. It comes with a bolero song "Mi Propio Yo", a latin soul "Adorable Ilusion" and the rest of the album is
packed up with heavy salsa and that lovely sounding of early the '70s that pushes El Padriño upstairs - to the top deck, where
the Godfather is supposed to be - top notch! - (Luis Libres - MBS).
